When that bladder fails, typically from age or from the sustained cycling a recirculating system puts it through, the tank can no longer absorb the expanding water, and pressure has nowhere else to go. The result is often a loud pop or bang from inside the water heater closet or mechanical room, sometimes mistaken for a more serious problem, when the actual fix is a straightforward same-visit replacement of the expansion tank itself.
